Yin Yang Scarf Knitting Pattern

I learned about the cartridge belt rib a while ago and decided to try knitting it in two colors. The result reminds me of yin yang, as each side has mostly one color with bits of the other color peeking through. You can purchase an inexpensive PDF from my Ravelry store here.

I used 2 colors of a cotton and acrylic blend DK yarn. Each skein was about 3.5 oz (100 g) and 219 yd (200 m), and I ended up using about 4.5 oz (128 g) or 285 yd (260 m) of each color. Any kind of yarn would work with this pattern, but note that a different gauge will affect the final size. Use needles that are slightly larger than recommended. Because of the way the colors are worked, DPNs or cable needles would work best.

Skill Level:
Easy

Materials:
• US 7 (4.5 mm) DPNs or circular needles
• DK yarn in 2 colors, about 4.5 oz (128 g) 285 yd (260 m) of each color

Gauge:
26 sts x 36 rows to 4” (10 cm) in cartridge belt rib after blocking
* Gauge is not critical, but a different gauge will affect the finished size.

Size:
9.5” (24 cm) wide, 60” (152 cm) long after blocking
Adjust the size by casting on a different number of stitches (multiple of 4 + 3) or working a different number of rows.

Abbreviations:
k = knit
p = purl
st(s) = stitch(es)
sl1p = slip 1 purlwise
wyif = with yarn in front
wyib = with yarn in back
rep = repeat
MC = main color
CC = contrasting color
RS = right side
WS = wrong side
CO = cast on
BO = bind off

Notes:
You will knit on the RS twice, once with each color, and then knit on the WS twice, again once with each color. In order to do this, after each CC row, you will need to slide your work to the right side of the needle and work the same side with MC. After every MC row, you will turn your work then continue with CC. Cable needles or a pair of DPNs would work best for this.

Instructions:
With MC, CO 63 st.
Row 1 (RS): With CC, k2, *sl1p wyif, k3; rep from * until 1 st remains, sl1p wyif. Slide work back to right side of the needle so that you are ready to work another RS row.
Row 2 (RS): With MC, *sl1p wyib, p3; rep from * until 3 sts remain, sl1p wyib, p2.
Row 3 (WS): With CC, rep row 2. Slide work back to right side of the needle so that you are ready to work another WS row.
Row 4 (WS): With MC, sl1p wyib, k1, *sl1p wyif, k3; rep from * until 1 st remain, sl1p wyif.
Row 5 (RS): With CC, rep row 4. Slide work back to right side of the needle so that you are ready to work another RS row.
Rep rows 2-5 until scarf measures about 60” or desired length, ending with row 4. With CC, BO in pattern purling the sts that would get slipped. Weave in ends. Block to size.

Socials

I haven’t blogged in a while. After I finished the pattern for the balloon dog, I decided to post a reel to Instagram to show how to assemble it. Somehow, I decided I would make a TikTok and a YouTube channel. I spent the past two weeks figuring out TikTok and YouTube, while continuing to post on Instagram. I still haven’t figured out YouTube, to be honest, so I have nothing on there yet. My TikTok isn’t terribly active yet either.

Anyway, now my link in bio would have so many links, so I’ve compiled them in Linktree.
