Tangram Texture Blanket Pattern

A corner-to-corner blanket inspired by a tangram puzzle. Each piece features a different texture but they all use only knit and purl stitches. The entire blanket is worked in one piece with no seaming. It is a great project for an advanced beginner looking to try new stitch patterns and intarsia. This pattern is available for $4.00 USD on my Ravelry.

Skill Level:
Intermediate

Materials:
• US 10 (6 mm) circular needle
• Worsted yarn: about 3.5 oz (100 g) 191 yd (175 m) of purple, red, green, beige; 1.75 oz (50 g) 96 yd (88 m) of yellow, orange; 7 oz (200 g) 382 yd (350 m) of blue and pink
* I used an acrylic worsted yarn, but any kind of yarn would work with this pattern. A different gauge will affect the final size. Each skein was about 3.5 oz (100 g) 191 yd (175 m), and I ended up using about 1 skein of purple, red, green, beige; half a skein of yellow, orange; and two skeins of blue and pink. Because the middle part can get quite long, cable needles would work best.

Gauge:
12 sts x 24 rows to 4” (10 cm) in stockinette after blocking
*Gauge is not critical, but a different gauge will affect the finished size.

Size:
Completed size about 74” (187 cm) corner-to-corner, or 52” by 52” (132 cm by 132 cm)

Notes:
The blanket is worked from corner to corner in three sections, plus the border at the end. The first section is the purple piece. The second section is the red, yellow, green, and orange pieces. The third section is the blue and pink pieces.

For the first two sections, you will do two increases every RS row, one at the beginning and one at the end. For the WS rows, knit in pattern, accounting for the increase stitches. Starting in the second section, you will work with more than one color. Remember to twist the yarns on the back side when you switch colors. In the third section, you will do two decreases every RS row, one at the beginning and one at the end. For the WS rows, knit in pattern, accounting for the decrease stitches.

Specific instructions are written for this size, but guidelines are also provided for making a different size. This blanket uses eight different stitch patterns, with both written directions and charts for all of them. The gauge for the different types of stitch patterns may be different, but the stitches can stretch to the right size. Blocking can also help.
